I am a planner and a schemer. I always have been. I start my Christmas shopping in January and I plan and save for vacations years in advance. I am always looking down the road to the future. That is why my first faith lesson from the Lord during this season, was also one of the hardest.
One morning I read Matthew 6:34 and it hit me like a ton of bricks. The verse is so different from who I am and how I operate. Matt 6:34 says, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of it own.” Rest assured, there are many scriptures that extoll the virtues of planning ahead and saving for the future. That is not what this is talking about. When we worry about tomorrow it steals our strength for today. Lamentations 3:22&23 promises us that …”his compassions are new every morning.” He gives us enough to make it through the day; THIS day. I learned that if I looked down the road at all I had to carry, the burden would crush me. He gives me the grace only for today. All I have to do is make it to sundown.
So if you are on a hard path that seems to have no end, don’t strain your eyes looking for the finish line. Your poor heart may faint at the distance yet to go. Instead, just look to sundown. Tomorrow will be a new day with fresh grace.
‘Tull Sundown’
Thank You Jesus for fresh grace each day and help me to remember this truth as I walk through the rest of the days You give me.
